India’s domestic airlines carried 1.37 crore passengers in May 2024, registering a 3.99% yearly increase and a growth of 4.40% monthly, as per data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday (June 14).

India’s largest airline in terms of fleet size and market share continued its dominance and retained the highest market share at 61.6% in May. The airline carried 85.04 lakh passengers, nearly 5 lakh more passengers than the previous month. IndiGo also improved its market share by 1% versus April.

Tata Son’s owned full-service carrier Air India held the second spot by registering a market share of 13.7%. Air India carried 18.93 lakh passengers in May, a tad higher than the previous month. However, in terms of market share, it dropped in terms of the previous month, as in April Air India’s market share was 14.2%.

Vistara held the third-highest market share at 9.2% which remained unchanged in comparison to the previous month. Vistara carried 12.71 lakh passengers in May, almost 50 thousand more passengers in comparison to April. Tata Son’s low-cost carrier Air India Express held a market share of 5.1%, 0.3% lower in comparison to April. AI Express carried 7.03 lakh passengers in May, almost 12 thousand fewer passengers in comparison to April. Tata Group’s airlines held a cumulative market share of 28% in May.

India’s newest commercial airline, Akasa’s market share improved to 4.8% from 4.4% and overtook SpiceJet to hold the fourth largest market share. Akasa carried 6.64 lakh passengers in May, almost 80,000 more passengers in comparison to the previous month. SpiceJet’s market share slipped to 4% from 4.7% MoM. SpiceJet carried 5.54 lakh passengers in May, sharply lower from 6.17 lakh passengers in April.

Akasa continued to be the most punctual airline with an on-time performance (OTP) of 85.9%, followed by Vistara which held an OTP of 81.9% and Air India Express was the third most punctual airline with an OTP of 74.9%. IndiGo’s OTP in May was 72.78%, followed by Air India at 68.4% and SpiceJet at 60.7%.
